Realising the Ambition – new national practice guidance launched for childcare professionals
Replacing ‘Building the Ambition’ and ‘Pre-Birth to Three’, the latest guidance to be developed by Education Scotland is called ‘Realising the Ambition: Being Me’ and is aimed at all childcare professionals from early years through to primary school-aged children.

‘Realising the Ambition: Being Me’ builds upon the original principles and philosophy of Pre-Birth to Three and Building the Ambition and presents key information about the characteristics of child development based on research and evidence.

Throughout the development of this new national practice guidance, SCMA has been involved in contributing to and commenting on this resource, working with colleagues at Education Scotland to ensure that the role of childminders was well represented.

Janine Ryan, Head of Childminding Services at SCMA said: “We are delighted to welcome this new guidance, Realising the Ambition: Being Me, as it encapsulates two of the most important frameworks that guide a childminder’s everyday practice into one comprehensive package.

“Meeting children’s individual needs and enhancing their on-going development are central to any high-quality childminding setting, and this resource puts children at the heart of the guidance with practical information, signposts and examples.”

Essential for childminders in Scotland, this new guidance explores the range of interactions, experiences and spaces that we need to provide for babies and young children to help them learn and grow best from their earliest days through to being a young child in early primary school.

According to Education Scotland, ‘Realising the Ambition: Being Me’ increases expectations of high quality but still provides the necessary support for all who work in the early years sector and beyond.
