GDPR Guidance from the ICO for Childminders

GDPR Guidance from the ICO for Childminders
SCMA understands that the new GDPR may seem daunting as there is a lot of information, and misinformation, out there from a variety of different sources.

This is why we have worked closely with the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) Scotland Office to ensure accurate and proportionate information is available to support childminders in Scotland through the introduction of GDPR.

GDPR comes into force on 25 May 2018, but bear in mind this is a start date, where you should begin to make reasonable efforts to ensure data security in line with the new legislation.  Looking at your current procedures and drawing up a plan would be a good place to start, and then work towards making improvements.

SCMA will continue to issue more information as it is made available by the ICO, with more information planned for the summer issue of your Childminding magazine.

In consultation with SCMA, the ICO has written 'Preparing for GDPR: 8 Steps to Take Now' for childminders.  We have worked together to ensure the information is relatable to childminders and the professional services they provide, and to actually identify steps to take to ensure GDPR compliance.

For childminders already operating best practice when it comes to collecting, storing and handling data, the introduction of GDPR should not involve too many changes.

SCMA members can also access this information regarding the introduction to GDPR, online via the Membership Dashboard.

All childminders who store information about their minded children should be registered with the ICO. Previously only childminders who kept information on electronic devices had to register with the ICO; however due to the introduction of GDPR, all childminders are advised to register to ensure compliance.

The ICO states: “Don’t panic - the ICO is here to help. While data protection legislation can seem daunting there is a wide range of guidance and tools available from the ICO including a section of our website dedicated to micro-businesses, such as childminders.”
